SC refuses early hearing on plea against Rahul

The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to grant a plea for early hearing of a petition seeking CBI probe into Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s “British citizenship” issue.

A bench presided by Chief Justice H L Dattu told petitioner-advocate M L Sharma that the petition would come up for hearing in regular course.

The PIL contended that the Congress leader had played a “criminal fraud” by declaring himself as a British national and giving his London address in company documents of Backops Ltd before the registrar of companies in the UK.

“On 3.04.2009, Respondent no 1, Rahul Gandhi, filed his affidavit  before the Election Commission for election for Lok Sabha from Amethi constituency, but he never declared about his true citizenship of British as he already declared in UK,” the petition claimed.

Sharma claimed that he had made representation to the President and the CBI here on August 11 and November 22, asserting that no foreign national can become Member of Parliament. However, there was no reply.
