There are umpteen number of reasons to fall in love with December, be it the shopping sales, family reunions or the festive goodies. It also brings with it the ‘joy of giving’. Considering that many people are away from their families and friends during this festive season, many corporate companies are taking different initiatives to involve their employees in various activities and celebrations.

Patricia, Director IT Portfolio and Program Management, Lowe’s India, says, “The employees of Lowe’s India will volunteer and engage with ‘Habitat for Humanity India’. This will be observed on December 7 in Nagenahalli. The plan is to help construct homes for three families starting from setting up the foundation, moving raw materials and later painting these houses. The purpose is to help people love where they live.” She adds, “We are engaging in a week-long activity for the employees — our cafeteria will serve some seasonal Christmas delights, we’ll play ‘Secret Santa’ and on the final day, we will have carol singing and exchange gifts. I am lending a helping hand to many activities and events; it is so much fun. I am happy to be a part of this extended family!”

Another employee of the same company, Rakhee Dhar, explains, “In most of the companies that I have worked with, we have in-house Christmas celebrations with our co-workers. This time, we are looking to go out of the office space and involve ourselves with people outside, helping them love where they live and build homes for people who need that kind of support. This is a unique thing that we are doing and this definitely brings us a lot of joy. Some employees are taking time off to be with their families. And there is going to be lots of sweets and Christmas related food items.”

Another corporate organisation, MetricStream, celebrated ‘Joy of Giving’ (JOG) recently. This event is conducted as part of employee engagement activities every year during Christmas.

“Over the last five years, JOG has become an essential element of the MetricStream culture. We have pot luck lunches, where employees prepare food and sell it to other employees. This year, we had 45 stalls with North and South Indian and international cuisines. We also organised an auction among the employees where they donated photographs, art works and any kind of possessions and conducted a live bidding process, the proceedings of which were given to a non-profit, non-religious organisations,” explains Mohammed Reza, Senior Manager, Marketing.

He adds, “In fact, MetricStream celebrates every festival with the same enthusiasm and positivity. For Christmas, we organise internal competitions, employees decorate Christmas trees and their individual desks, they organise games like ‘Secret Santa’ and more. Considering that a lot of our employees live away from their families, we make sure we organise a team lunch, dinner and get-togethers that involve them as much as possible. All these activities are organised in order to build a sense of bonding.”

Companies like Ricoh India Ltd also celebrate Christmas in a grand way by planning a lot of fun activities, contests and competitions for their employees. AT Rajan, Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer, Ricoh India Ltd, says, “At Ricoh India Ltd, the festival of Christmas is celebrated with a lot of pomp and enthusiasm. We plan fun activities for our employees which are hosted in a span of 10 days and go on till New Years. All employees participate in various activities like theme-based bay decoration, treasure hunts, pot luck competitions and ‘Secret Santa’.” He adds, “As a part of our special initiative, our employees voluntarily visit old age homes and orphanages. At these visits, our employees gift various useful items such as blankets, heaters, food items, clothes and socks.”

At Tesco, they encourage their teams to make their office space look festive and get creative while decorating their team bays. Nick Williams, Director People and Corporate Communications,Tesco Bengaluru, says, “The employees take out time to hold carol singing sessions, conduct ‘Secret Santa’ and dress well for the occasion. This year, we have a colleague-led event called the ‘Talent Showcase’ where each one will entertain the others through music, dance and other performances. We also have a special food menu served in our cafeteria during the period. We also provideour colleagues the flexibility to take time off to be with their families during this festive occasion.”
