Aussies down Germany 4-1

To meet Holland in semifinal

Australia showed why they are regarded as one of the best sides in world hockey as they humbled Olympic champions Germany 4-1 to move into the semifinals of the Hockey World League Final here on Wednesday.

Though the Germans showed enough fight in the final quarter of the game, it was not to change the course of the tie as the world number one side rode on goals form Jeremy Hayward (4th minute), Jamie Dwyer (5th minute), Matthew Dawson (27th minute) and Glenn Turner (60th minute) to book their berth in the final four of the tournament.

The Kookaburras will take on defending champions the Netherlands in the semifinal, while Germany, who pulled one goal back through Christopher Ruhr in the 40th minute, will clash with Canada in a classification game.

Earlier in the day, Canada put up a fighting show before bowing out to Netherlands 2-0 in their quarterfinal game here at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel stadium.

Starting the game on a brighter note, the Canadians sat back to defend deep and absorb the pressure in the opening minutes of the game. But their resilience was broken mid-way through the second quarter as goals from Constantijin Jonker in the 25th minute and Roel Bovendeert in the 56th minute meant the Dutch continued their march in the competition.

Letting the higher-ranked side dominate the show for most parts, the Canadian defence held a tight line to frustrate the Dutch as chances went abegging for the Robert van der Horst-led side.

Dutch converted their first real chance to take the lead and made sure that they defended it well. Jonker had very little to do for his goal as Valentin Verga set him up a delightful cross from the right that beat two defenders before the 28-year-old could guide the ball past goalkeeper Antoni Kindler to open his side’s account.

Later in the final quarter, the defending champions doubled their advantage with Bovendeert slotting in his third goal of the tournament to put the match beyond Canada’s reach.

Results: Quarterfinals: Australi: 4 (Jeremy Hayward 4th minute, Jamie Dwyer 5th minute, Matthew Dawson 27th minute, Glenn Turner 60th minute) bt Germany: 1 (Christopher Ruhr 40th minute); Netherlands: 2 (Constantijin Jonker 25th minute, Roel Bovendeert 56th minute) bt Canada: 0.
