A 35-year-old robber has been arrested after an encounter with police in outer Delhi’s Swaroop Nagar on Friday.

Amit Kumar was wanted in an armed robbery of Rs 9 lakh, police said.

Amit and his accomplices had robbed a Prashant Vihar-based businessman having a rice godown at Siraspur on October 18.

The businessman was returning home after receipt of payments in his Maruti Swift.
“The gang waylaid him in a Hyundai i20 near Libaspur underpass and robbed his bag containing Rs 9 lakh at gunpoint,” said Vikramjit Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer). A case was filed with Samaypur Badli police station.

On October 25, a man named Mohan, involved in the case, was arrested with Rs 38,000 of the looted amount.

During interrogation, he told police about providing information about the cash being transported to Amit, Pradeep and Sandeep.

Sandeep was arrested in Rohini sector 19 and Rs 1.75 lakh of the looted amount was recovered at his instance on November 11.

“On Friday, a secret information was received about Amit and Pradeep,” Singh added.

At 4.45 am, a police team intercepted a Maruti WagonR on Dharamshala Road in Swaroop Nagar. They tried to flee, but were chased and cornered in a narrow lane.

“The gang damaged a number of vehicles parked there in a bid to escape. They finally decided to abandon the car and tried to escape on foot,” Singh said.

Pradeep opened fire at the police team after Amit instigated him. Head constable Ved Prakash and constable Sandeep escaped unhurt and managed to overpower Amit.

Pradeep and another gang member named Guddu managed to flee.

Due to the firing, a case under Indian Penal Code and Arms Act has been registered with Swaroop Nagar police station.

Amit told police that they had recently purchased the WagonR with the robbed money.
