A 24-year-old man and his girlfriend were reportedly caught lifting a gold chain worth Rs 40,000 at a jewellery store on Sarakki main road in JP Nagar on Monday.

The man had posed as a sub-inspector. The crime played out like a scene from a Bollywood con film.

Kishore Kumar wanted to give his girlfriend, Kavitha, 22, a birthday gift but he was broke. Kavitha celebrated her birthday four days ago. Both of them plotted to lift gold jewellery from a store.

On Monday evening, they went to Vimal Jewellers showroom. Kumar introduced himself as a sub-inspector and even flashed an identity card. He asked the store staff to show them gold chains. As one of the staff members started showing them chains of various designs, Kavitha diverted their attention. Kumar then lifted a chain and gave it to Kavitha who quickly concealed it in her handbag.

A while later, the staff found the gold chain missing and sounded an alert. They immediately closed the entrance and didn’t let anyone leave the store. They also called the police who arrived at the spot and started checking the CCTV footage. A camera had clearly caught the couple’s act.

The police then asked Kavitha for her handbag and found the chain in it. The store filed a complaint and the couple was arrested, a senior police officer said.

Kumar claimed that he worked in the Human Resources (HR) department of the multinational Samsung while Kavitha said she was a process executive at Infosys.

But they failed to produce their company identity cards or other employment documents. The officer said a team of policemen had been sent to the two companies’ offices to check the couple’s claim. The police suspect that the couple are involved in similar offences reported from other parts of Karnataka. Kumar is a resident of Devasandra main road while Kavitha lives in Electronics City and hails from Mandya.
