The State police department has instructed all the police station across the State to observe ‘Dalit Day’ on second Sunday of  every month.

A senior police officer, who did not wish to be named, said that a circular had been issued to all police stations in this regard, recently.

“It was learnt that several cases of atrocities against dalits are pending and there are many cases where dalits are blamed and treated in an unfair manner. The police have to act and look into such pending cases,” said the officer.

According to the circular, senior police officers should conduct a meeting with dalits and prepare a report on the problems they are facing. The report should be submitted to the Superintendent of Police of respective districts, who will again have to conduct a meeting with his subordinates on the last Sunday of every month.

On ‘Dalit Day’, police officials should also visit the localities were members of the dalit community reside and talk to them about their problems. Any police officer who fails to perform his/her duty, will be punished accordingly, said the official.
