Dance is more than just a beautiful way to express one’s emotions. For many like me, it is a way of life which makes one feel wonderful and energised — physically, mentally and emotionally. Every dance form has its benefits. When you learn a new dance style, you also learn about a new culture and heritage. Dance helps elevate you to a higher level of relaxation. Dancing is an excellent outlet to channelise energy and one of the most fun ways to loosen up after a hectic day at work.

For me, dancing is not only a recreational activity but also a way to express myself. It provides me with an emotional and creative outlet, instantly putting me in a better frame of mind.

For me, it is the best therapy when I am stressed. It elevates my mood, helping me stay focussed. It gives me a sense of wellbeing and shuns away any negative thoughts which is largely helpful in decision making.

Dancing builds stamina and endurance, helping me to work harder for longer periods of time without fatigue. It is an exciting workout routine to keep your body and mind healthy. It is also a fun way to be fit and active.

It builds self-confidence and self-discipline as it increases self-esteem and improves social skills.

Recalling steps, routines and dance patterns is a really good mental exercise. It helps keep the mind young, quick, alert and open.

The time, dedication and coordination that dancing involves helps improve your managerial skills and provides an artistic outlet. Many forms of dancing which requires a partner, helps in building trust, in-turn enabling to function more effectively in a team.

Some of the dance forms that have helped me gain a perfect balance are:

Salsa: This is a dance form that includes all the elements of an effective aerobic workout. Not only does it help in following a rhythm, but it also motivates you to be synchronised and balanced. More importantly, salsa helps bring balance in one’s professional life, as it is a dance which requires teamwork.

As it involves dancing with partners, where one has to ‘lead’ and ‘follow’, it helps bring out the team player in a person and progressively increases one’s team work skills. I often find that the camaraderie and enjoyment I experience while dancing motivates me to continue staying active.

Belly dance: There is no set music for belly dancing. So, dancing to the music that I love keeps me uplifted and energised throughout. Moreover, belly dancing is not just about hip-movements; in fact, it is the most healthy and beneficial of all exercise routines.

Belly dancing helps me get in touch with my inner self, uplifting my self-confidence. It helps in personal growth by making one feel beautiful and confident.

At the end of the day, one needs to choose what form of dance works best for them and helps them grow and de-stress.
