Protests for closure of waste processing units

Last Updated 21 December 2015, 21:12 IST

Hundreds of village residents on Monday turned up at Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike’s two garbage processing units at Seegehalli and Kannahalli off Magadi Road, demanding immediate closure of the units.

Yeshwantpur MLA S T Somashekhar assured the agitators that he would arrange a meeting for them with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Somashekhar said the problem had started because the Palike dumped thousands of tonnes of waste at these two facilities even before they become operational. The waste, which indicates that the Palike officials are not performing their work properly, has resulted in unbearable stench.

Somashekhar said, “These facilities need to be operated scientifically or else, they will become a perennial problem for the residents. Once the MLC election process is completed, the matter will be taken up with the chief minister.
Palike officials said the units were already operational. Garbage has been dumped for tests to be conducted.

The residents should have patience and give them time to run it, the officials said. “Once it becomes operational, it will be a boon for those who are agitating today,” the official said.
