Pilikula festival from tomorrow

A host of events lined up for occasion; explore local traditional games, culture

A four-day Pilikula Habba with varied activities will be held at the Dr Shivaram Karanth Pilikula Nisargadhama from December 24.

Karnataka Tulu, Beary, Konkani, Kodava, Arebhashe Samskruthi and Sahitya Academies and Kalkura Foundation will organise a series of programmes on the occasion, Executive Director Prabhakar Sharma said.

Speaking to media persons here on Tuesday, Sharma said it is an attempt to create awareness on culture and tradition.

Tulu Academy President Janaki Brahmavar said local traditional games like Lagori, hitting the coconut, Tulu quiz, Tulu songs, folk dance and a magic show by Kudroli Ganesh will be held on December 24.

A dance ballet, titled ‘Kordabbu Tannimanilu’ by Chakrapani Nritya Kendra, will be an added attraction. A procession of folk art troupes, highlighting various traditional culture of the land, will be held at 3.30 pm.

Christmas celebrations
To highlight the spirit of Christmas, Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy will create cribs at the venue. Carol singing in Konkani, English, Tulu and Kannada, display and sale of cakes, iconic cakes, quiz on Konkani tradition and cultural programmes will be held at Urban Haat in Pilikula on December 25, the academy President Roy Castellino said.

Apart from this, Dakshina Kannada district-level men’s volleyball will be organised jointly by the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy and DK Volleyball Association on December 25. The winners will get Rs 6,000 and trophy, Rs 5,000, Rs 4,000 and Rs 3,000 respectively. Awards will be given to the ‘best thrasher,’ ‘best all rounder’, ‘best lifter’ and ‘best libro.’

The volleyball will be held for only DK district players. All players have to be in uniform. For details, those interested can contact Nagesh at 9844793922.

On December 26, Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy and Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy will organise a ‘Daff’ competition at 3 pm. The winners will get Rs 6,000, Rs 4,000 and Rs 2,000 respectively. Apart from this, there will be ‘Tass’, Arabic dance, ‘Parekali’ ‘Polkat,’ ‘Ummathat,’ ‘Kolat,’ ‘Urutti Kottat’ and ‘Kolkali Kodava dance’ by the academy. A Mehandi competition for ladies will be held. Along with this, Beary folk games line ‘billis,’ ‘lagori,’ ‘baccha’ and ‘goliyata’ will also be held, Beary, Kodava Academy Registrar Umarabba said.

The Karnataka Arebhashe Samskruthi and Sahitya Academy and Kalkura Foundation will organise a fireless cooking competition  between 3 pm and 5 pm on December 27. There should be a maximum of four participants in a  team. All ingredients should be raw and if it is cooked or boiled, the team will be disqualified. Other programmes
As a part of cultural programme, there will be ‘Hejje Gejje Ninadolagenuttu’ by Prameela Lokesh and team, ‘Kolata’ by Maragodu ladies team, ‘arebhashe folk dance,’ ‘arebhashe song,’ ‘shobane’ from 3 pm onwards.

Dinky ice cream eating competition will be held on the last day at 4.30 pm for the children in the age group of five to 12. The participants should produce proof of date of birth and photo ID.

There is no registration fee for participating in these competitions. There will be free bus facility from Vamanjoor to Pilikula and Pilikula to Vamanjoor from 3 pm to 8 pm on all the four days. A organic and Swavalambi Santhe will also be organised.
