Engineers dominate CAT 2015

Engineers have dominated CAT-2015 conducted for admissions to IIMs and other reputed B-schools this year, as all 17 students who scored 100 percentile came from the stream.

Of the 17 top scorers, there was only one woman. A total of 16 students had secured 100 percentile in CAT 2014.

But transgenders had the real reason to celebrate this year as 41 of them made their debut and took the nationwide test under the gender-neutral category. Among the 41 transgenders, the highest score was 83.89 percentile. A total of 80 transgenders had applied but only 41 of them appeared in the examination. “Sorry, we are not giving out personal details about test takers,” Ujjal Kumar Dey, corporate communication head of IIM-Ahmedabad, which conducted CAT-2015 in November, told Deccan Herald on Monday.

Transgender students could make their debut in CAT 2015 as the Supreme Court passed a landmark judgment in April, directing the Centre to recognise the community as the “third gender”.

IIM-A is not the first institution to have adopted inclusive policy in education to accommodate transgenders in wake of the apex court judgment. Earlier, Nalsar Law University in Hyderabad had issued a gender-neutral graduation certificate to a student belonging to the community.

Over 2.18 lakh students registered for the test. Of them, however, a little over 1.79 lakh students took the test.

Gender disparity continued to remain a concern as the male candidates outnumbered women in CAT 2015.

Of the total students who took the test, 58,270 were women against more than 1.21 lakh men, according to a gender break-up of the candidates released by the IIM-A.
The test, however, witnessed a small increase in the number of students compared to those recorded for CAT 2014.

The IIM-A declared the test results last week amid rumours of hacking of the CAT-2015 website.
