'Cheated' contractor hangs himself

A 43-year-old civil contractor committed suicide in a car shed in Kempegowdanagar on Monday after reportedly being cheated by the president of a government employees’ association.

The deceased has been identified as Vinod Kumar,43, a resident of Ramakrishna Mutt Road, KG Nagar. He hanged himself to death from a hook in his car shed on Monday morning. His daughter came out of the house to go to school and raised an alarm after seeing her father’s body, said the police. The police have detained the Nataraj, president of the Government Group ‘D’ Employees’ Association, for interrogation.

According to the police, Vinod was residing with his wife Girija and his 13-year-old daughter for the past few years in KG Nagar. Srinivas, the priest of Ayyappa Swamy temple in the same locality, had introduced Vinod to Nataraj, president of the Government Group D Employees’ Association.

Nagaraj claimed that a layout is being formed in Nagarabhavi and assured to allot Vinod a site. He collected Rs 40 lakh from Vinod for the site around seven months ago. However, no layout was formed and Nagaraj did not repay the money to Vinod after repeated requests. Vinod, his wife and mother, had pleaded with Nagaraj to repay Rs 40 lakh. A cheque for Rs five lakh issued by Nagaraj returned dishonoured.
