Bangalore Derby trophy unveiled

The trophy for the Garuda Bangalore Derby, to be held at the Bangalore Turf Club here on Saturday, was unveiled here on Thursday.

Actor Pranitha Subhash unveiled the trophy in the presence of BTC chairman AC Satish Chandra and Garuda Group Managing Director Uday B Garudachar.

The race is traditionally held on Republic Day every year, but in view of the 36th Asian Racing Conference in Mumbai from January 24-29, the biggest racing day of the winter season has been advanced to Saturday.

The total stakes announced for the blue riband event is Rs 1,25,44,000. While the owner of the winning horse will take home Rs 61 lakh, the second-placed horse owner will be richer by Rs 20.5 lakh. The third-place will fetch Rs 10.24 lakh and fourth-placed Rs 5.17 lakh.

The draw for the 10-horse blue riband race was also held on Thursday. Pre-race favourites New Alliance and Brilliant Cut drew gates numbers 2 and 6 while Bangalore Summer Derby winner Angel Dust -- a dark horse here -- drew No 1.

In recent times, many top horses from the country has been missing from the Bengaluru field due to the date being close to the Indian Derby.
