HC orders BFI, IOA to select national teams

Last Updated 02 February 2016, 19:57 IST

In what could be seen as a relief for the basketball community in India, the Karnataka High Court on Tuesday passed an order directing the Basketball Federation of India (BFI), Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports to convene a meeting to select the national men’s and women’s teams for the upcoming South Asian Games which begin in Guwahati on Saturday.

Justice Ashok B Hinchigeri passed an interim order in a petition filed by the BFI faction led by K Govindaraj challenging the selection trials called by the IOA to select the national teams for the South Asian Games.

The Govindaraj-led faction had contended that since they have been recognised by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) they are the authority for the game in the country and that they should reserve the right to select the national team for any international event.
