Artists have often experimented with the theme of mythology to depict various feelings and emotions.

Similarly, Kolkata-based artist Ranjit Sarkar’s works, which are currently on display in the city, also revolve around the mystery of mythology. Titled ‘Enlightenment of Journey’, his solo show explores the theme of folklore and legends in a contemporary context.

“I find mythological stories very interesting as they depict sentiments of pure love and joy. I always try to reflect my contemporary style to mythological characters. Also, I add my temperament to create the images as powerful and positive,” Sarkar says.

In his works, the artist has depicted characters from mythological texts like the Ramayana and Mahabharata and features Ram, Sita, Krishna, Karna, and even Kunti. He has depicted the relationship between celestial nymph Menaka and sage Vishwamitra, while also exploring devotional love through Krishna and Radha’s story, all using mild tones and textures.

The self-taught artist says he aims to “relay the message of peace and non-violence” to the younger generation through his works, and decided to do that through mythological characters because they “give a clear message of co-existence”.

On the title of his show, Sarkar says his work is a journey, and “experience I getduring the journey is enlightening.” The show is on at Lokayata Art Gallery, Hauz Khas Village, until February 11.
