A doctor and a police constable filed complaints accusing each other of assault on Sunday night. A L Sabin Iqbal, a doctor at a private nursing home near Peenya and Manjunath, a police constable attached to the Peenya police station, were hospitalised following the incident, said the police.

According to the police, the incident occurred around 11.30 pm at SRS Junction when a team of police officials were out on patrol. The police had formed teams to check suspicious movements and stays in lodges due to a rise in chain-snatching cases in the area. The team went to a lodge in Kiriloskar Layout to check the records. Manjunath, the driver, was in a jeep parked on the roadside, said the police.

When Iqbal and his two friends came to the spot in shorts, Manjunath grew suspicious at the sight of their attire and sought to know their background. The trio lost their cool and objected to being questioned about their background. Manjunath explained to the trio that police were checking suspicious movements as there had been a rise in the number of chain snatching cases. The trio alleged that police were trying to extort money from local businessmen and a verbal spat ensued between Manjunath and Iqbal, added the police.

“The trio pushed down Manjunath, thrashed him and sat on him. The police inspector rushed to the spot after Manjunath raised an alarm. The inspector caned the trio to rescue the constable. The trio fled from the spot,” DCP (North) TR Suresh told Deccan Herald.

Iqbal went to a nursing home past midnight and got admitted to an emergency ward. Later, he lodged a complaint of assault against the constable, said the police.

Iqbal, who works in Gadad Nursing Home in Bagalakunte, alleged in his complaint that the police constable and the inspector assaulted him while he was returning home with his friends after duty. He claimed that the police verbally abused and physically attacked him without any reason, added the police.
