Parties queue up to woo DMDK

Last Updated 10 February 2016, 19:19 IST

In the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly polls, actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth’s DMDK has emerged as the most sought after party to form an alliance.

Major political leaders from the DMK are competing with each other to woo Vijayakanth. Even the Peoples Welfare Alliance (PWA)–including the CPI, CPM, MDMK and the VCK–the BJP and also the Congress, too, have started showing more interest in having an electoral understanding with the DMDK.

The move to woo Vijayakanth came against the backdrop of the ruling AIADMK supremo and Chief Minister Jayalalitha’s indication that her party is likely to contest the Assembly polls alone. The DMDK is expected to play a major role this election, too, after having bagged about 10 per cent of the vote share in the 2011 Assembly polls.

So keen are some political leaders, that they do not mind waiting for their turn to talk with the DMDK chief.

This was evident when the BJP delegation led by party state president Tamilissai Soundararajan was made to wait before the actor met them a few weeks ago.  As the meeting was inconclusive, the BJP is planning another attempt at talks with Vijayakanth through senior leader and Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar.

DMK president M Karunanidhi, who is also trying to woo Vijayakanth, also went a step forward and met the DMDK leader recently at his residence.
