Woman tries to commit suicide 20 days after 'rape'

Tells husband about it after he threatens of suicide

A 30-year-old woman has alleged that she was raped by her landlord a month ago when she was alone in her room.

After the rape, she didn’t reveal the matter to anyone as she was threatened by the 45-year-old accused of dire consequences.

Sandwiched between a sense of guilt and a fear of being murdered, the woman tried to commit suicide by consuming several sleeping pills on January 31, 20 days after her alleged rape.
A native of Bihar, the victim had been living with her husband and two children at a rented apartment in east Delhi’s Shashi Garden for the last year or so.

“I am a patient of depression and often remain on bed for several days. On January 9, I and my 12-year-old daughter were sitting in our room, when our landlord came outside our first-floor house. He gave my daughter 100 rupees and told her to go out and have chocolate,” said the victim.

“As my daughter went downstairs, my landlord pounced upon me and raped me for several minutes. After the act he left the room, when my daughter arrived she asked me the reason of my tears but I didn’t tell her anything,’’ she added.

After the act, the accused threatened the woman not to reveal the matter to anyone.
On January 31, unable to cope up with the mental torture and guilt, she swallowed several sleeping pills at a go and went unconscious.

“I wanted to commit suicide, however, the doctors saved me,” she added.
She was taken to the Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital where she was given medical treatment and doctors were successful in saving her life.

“When she came back, I cried in front of her and asked why she took such a step. After I threatened her of committing suicide, she disclosed to me about the act of the landlord. I was so furious. I went to the police station but didn’t get any help from them,” said the victim’s husband.
The husband then reported the matter to the women helpline number. After that a police complaint was registered on February 8 at the Pandav Nagar police station.

Police have registered a case of rape and criminal intimidation against the accused under sections 376 and 506 of Indian Penal Code.

“The FIR has been registered and the accused has been identified, we are investigating the case and soon the accused will be detained,” said Bhairon Singh Gujjar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East)
