A few years down the line, her kidneys had stopped functioning completely. In the following months, her parents spent sleepless nights. <br /><br />“Initially, we began with haemodialysis. When she was on Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis, the bag containing the dialysis fluid had to be drained once in <br />four hours. Later, we considered kidney transplant as an option and her mother came forward to donate,” her father said at the hospital on Wednesday, the eve of World Kidney Day. He wished to remain anonymous. <br /><br />Speaking about the case, Dr H Sudarshan Ballal, chairman, Manipal Hospitals, said the post-transplant medication caused stunting in children and hence, in her case, steroid-free immunosuppressants were administered. But this line of treatment may not be possible in all transplants as that will need a dedicated team of experts and a higher expenditure. <br /><br />Dr Ballal advised parents to look out for such symptoms as puffiness in the face, swelling of eyes, legs and feet, bloating, stunted growth and anaemia to identify a possible kidney ailment early. <br /><br />Meanwhile, as part of the World Kidney Day event, Kannada actor Ragini Dwivedi felicitated young achievers from various fields. <br /></p>
