Thousands of guests attend canine wedding

Making no exception to dogs, a man in Uttar Pradesh conducted a lavish ceremony for getting two canines married.

Thousands of people attended the unique dog wedding at a village in Kaushambi district –about 200 kilometres from capital Lucknow- and enjoyed the sumptuous feast organised for the event.

Reports said the “bride” dog owned by Jang Bahadur of Pawra village was given in marriage to “groom” dog owned by Basant Kumar in Hindu tradition. Organisers distributed invitation cards to residents of many nearby villages, making arrangements at the venue to allow thousands to witness the strange event, where priests chanted mantras to perform the wedding rituals.

Jung Bahadur had arranged a massive community feast for the “wedding party”. People were also seen taking pictures of the wedding.  After the wedding was solemnised, there was the “Vidai” ceremony to see off the bride, where Jung Bahadur  broke down.

Bahadur showered his affections on the dog, which he named ‘Shaguniya’, providing it all the facilities he gave for his children, local residents said.

While this may be the rare instance of dogs getting married, a man in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district performed  last rites for his dog killed in an accident. He also gave “terahwin bhoj”, a big feast served on the thirteenth day ceremony.
