Hat-trick for Surendra; Bibin grabs gold

Surendra, who won gold in 3000M in Suzhou and in 5000M in Kunshan, clocked 8:07.22 to corner with glory by remaining unbeaten in the three legs. He was richer by $4,500 for winning three golds in the series, each victory giving him $1,500.

Indians swept the event with Ravinder Singh (8:07.91) and Sandeep Kumar (8:08.37) winning silver and bronze respectively, while Elam Singh (8:12.03) and Kashinath Aswale (8:13.79) were fourth and fifth respectively.

Meanwhile, Bibin bagged the second gold for India by winning the men’s 400 in 46.76, upsetting Chinese Liu Xiaosheng, who took the silver in a photo finish after both were credited with the same time. Another Indian, Shake Mortaza, took the bronze in 47.42.
Overall, India won two gold, four silver and seven bronze medals, though no one attained the qualifying standards for the Berlin World Athletics Championships from August 15-23.

In women’s discus, Krishna Poonia (57.53M) and Seema Antil (56.88M) won their third successive silver and bronze respectively.

In men’s shot put, Om Prakash, who won gold in the second leg at Kunshan, finished second with a below-par 18.54M effort, behind Chang Ming-Huang (19.11M) of Taipei.
The men’s 4x400M relay quartet of Vinay Chowdhary, VB Bineesh, Mortaja and Bibin added another silver, clocking 3:13.49. The other bronze winners were Hari Shankar Roy (2.20M) in men’s high jump, Anil Singh in men’s javelin with an effort of 71.82M, Prakash Verma in men’s 800 in 1:51.55 and the men’s 4x100M relay quartet in 39.68s.
