Traffic jams continue, PWD opens makeshift path

Last Updated 24 March 2016, 04:36 IST

As parts of Delhi saw massive traffic snarls for the third day on Wednesday due to a road cave-in on Bhairon Marg, Public Works Department (PWD) started the process to open a makeshift path on the other side of the affected road.

PWD officials at the spot told Deccan Herald their target is to open Bhairon Marg by Thursday morning.

“We will open the road, and let the traffic coming from Ring Road bypass the affected part by dividing the other side of the road through a diversion so that vehicles coming to and fro Ring Road can use this route,” said a senior PWD official.

Delhi Water Minister Kapil Mishra told reporters on Wednesday that a Delhi Jal Board pipe has been damaged at the cave-in site and work is on to repair it.

Repair work going
“The work might take a while but we are trying that minimal inconvenience is caused to office goers on Monday,” he said, adding that officials have found out that this particular site has faced similar problems earlier as well.

Delhi Jal Board (DJB) officials, entrusted with the task of filling up the cavity, said it would take them at least two to three weeks to completely resolve the issue.

“We have been digging up the place, It is at least 40 feet deep. It appears that a sewer line has been shattered through which water is leaking here. We have closed the water supply and waiting for the water to dry up,” said a DJB official.

Diversion of Road
The road had caved-in on Sunday, making the traffic out-of-bound on the busy Bhairon Marg which connects Ring Road with Mathura Road.

Due to the restriction, the traffic piled up from ITO till east Delhi’s Vikas Marg, NH-24 and IP extension.

On Wednesday, commuters travelling between central and east Delhi faced massive traffic jams on ITO, Mathura Road, and Vikas Marg.

“Tomorrow being a festival day, we expect less traffic on roads, and from Friday, due to the arrangements by the PWD, hopefully things will be better,” said Sharad Aggarwal, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic).
