Latha was married to Selvaraj (40), a construction supervisor, three years ago. They have a 18-month-old boy. Of late, the couple used to quarrel over Selvaraj’s drinking habit, his refusal to pay for the family’s expenses and his ill-treatment of his wife.

According to police, on February 14 night, Selvaraj came home in an inebriated state and went to bed. He noticed Latha trying to take out a Rs 20 note from his shirt pocket. He reportedly became violent, beat her up. An angry Latha retaliated by dousing him with kerosene and setting him on fire. As her husband burned, Latha locked the house and fled, police added.

Hearing Selvaraj’s cries for help, neighbours broke open the door and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he died the next day. In his dying declaration, he told the police that his wife set him on fire. Latha is now in Central Prisons, Parappana Agrahara.

Silted up tank claims life

A car driver with an IT company drowned in a lake in Mahadevapura on Thursday evening.
Police said Guruprasad (28) from Kanakapura and his two friends went for a swim in the Kundalahalli tank. Guruprasad, a good swimmer jumped into the water, while his friends stayed on the bank, watching him. When Guruprasad did not come up for several minutes, they were alarmed and immediately contacted his family and police. Corporation workers had reportedly dumped garbage and other wastes in the tank which has a large accumulation of silt, making it extremely difficult to swim.

Police say that Guruprasad was trapped in the silt and had drowned. His body was fished out on Friday.
