Civil services prelims on Aug 7

The prelims for this year's Civil Services Examination will be conducted across India on August 7.

The Union Public Service Commission has issued the notification for the examination on Wednesday. The last date for submitting online applications is on May 27 till 11.59 pm, after which the link will be disabled. "Candidates are strongly advised to apply online well in time without waiting for the last date for submission of applications," the UPSC said. A general category candidate would get six attempts while OBC candidates will get nine attempts.

The number of vacancies to be filled on the result of the examination is expected to be 1,079, which includes 34 vacancies reserved for disabled category. The notification emphasised that the government "strives to have a workforce which reflects gender balance and women candidates are encouraged to apply".

UPSC conducts CSE annually in three stages — preliminary, main and interview — to select candidates for Indian Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service and Indian Police Service, among others.

The preliminary exams will be held in 72 cities across the country, including Delhi, Bengaluru, Mysuru, Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kozhikode, Madurai, Mumbai, Puducherry, Thiruvananthapuram, Tirupati, Tiruchirappalli, Vellore, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam and Warangal.

Applicants, who cannot get a centre of their choice due to ceiling, will be required to choose a centre from the remaining ones.
