Medicos, docs protest attack on hospital

Hundreds of postgraduate students and doctors of MVJ Medical College and Research Hospital in Hoskote staged a protest on Saturday after a patient’s relatives assaulted a few students and damaged the hospital.

On Friday, relatives of Beeresh (24), who died of pneumonia, damaged the intensive care unit, the medical superintendent’s office and the reception and attacked 10 staff members. The doctors staged a protest over lack of security and demanded the arrest of the patient’s relatives.

President of the Indian Medical Association, Karnataka branch, Dr Prabhakara G N said the police took more than three hours to book a case. He sought to know why no arrests had been made even after the CCTV footage was shown to them. “The patient was rushed to the hospital with septicemia on Thursday and the chances of his survival were bleak. A provision in the 2009 Special Act, says anyone damaging a hospital must be arrested. It’s a non-bailable offence,” he said.

A senior doctor said Beeresh was put on a ventilator soon after his arrival and he died of cardiac arrest on Friday.

The patient’s family said they were not given the discharge summary even after repeated requests as they wanted to shift him to a different hospital.

Murali, Beeresh’s brother, said, “They did one investigation after another. We kept asking them for a discharge summary. They said it would be given only after a senior doctor arrives. The doctor never turned up. It was only the PG students who came on rounds.”

IMA threatens agitation

President of the Indian Medical Association, Karnataka State Branch, Dr Prabhakara G N, protesting the delay in arresting those involved in the attack on the hospital, said the postgraduate medical students had been asked to go ahead with their protest till they got justice. “If this is not considered seriously, the IMA members will also stage an agitation,” he said.
