Last Updated 13 May 2016, 18:29 IST

Heaps of filth greets one who visit Madikeri private and KSRTC bus stand. Lack of hygiene and poor maintenance of drains present a clumsy look as one enters the town.

Heaps of garbage are strewn beside a lodge near private bus stand, none has come forward to dispose the garbage. Once the region starts experiencing rain, the garbage will emanate staunch smell.

The huge open drains are filled with filth and plastics, which will choke the easy flow of water during monsoon. There are a few hotels situated beside the drains. The stench from these clogged open drains are unbearable.

Shop owners said, “The drains should be cleaned at least once in a week by sprinkling bleaching powder. The weeds grown on the drains should be cleared, to allow the free flow of water.”

“The City Municipal Council has failed to construct retaining wall to the drains. If the driver is not cautious, then there are all possibility of vehicles falling into the gorge. The Municipal Council should construct retain walls to the drains at the earliest,” said the local residents.
