Rains lash Uttara Kannada for the second day

Strong winds uproot electricity poles, disrupt power supply

Heavy rains continued to lash Uttara Kannada district for the second day on Monday. Power supply was disrupted as strong winds uprooted several electricity poles. Several coastal taluks received moderate rains.

The movement of vehicles was severely affected in Vijayapura as heavy rains pounded the town since late Sunday night. A majority of the roads in the historic town were waterlogged. Gusty winds brought down branches of trees and uprooted electricity poles affecting power supply. However, the rains brought relief to the people who were reeling under sweltering heat. 

As at Monday 8 am, Vijayapura recorded 30.2 mm of rains, followed by Babaleshwara (22.4 mm), Devara Hipparagi (20.4 mm), Alamela (15.3 mm) and Mattihal (14 mm). Copious rains have triggered agricultural activities in the district.

A 48-year-old man was struck dead by lightning in Bilagi of Bagalkot district. The deceased has been identified as Ramesh Shet of Khetakhed village. He was rushing towards a temple for taking shelter from rains when lightning struck him.

ShivamoggaHeavy rains accompanied by strong winds, lightning and thunder lashed several parts of the district. Shivamogga, Sagar, Shikaripur, Hosanagar, Thirthahalli received good spell of rains. 

The rains that started around 7 pm lashed several parts of the district for more than 40 minutes. Power supply was disrupted in Shivamogga as electricity poles were uprooted due to strong winds. Rain water gushed into houses in the low-lying areas. Parts of Bhadravathi and Sorab also received rains.

HaveriA woman and her son were killed due to lightning in Parvatha Siddageri village of Hirekeruru taluk of the district. The deceased have been identified as Paribari Beenya Naik Lamani (55) and Mahadeva Naik Lamani (35).
