MP falls into sewage canal

Jamnagar MP Poonamben Maadam on Monday morning fell into an eight-feet water sewage canal during a visit to the demolition spot in the city. 

Maadam was in Jalaramnagar area where she was listening to people’s grievances and negotiating with the corporation officials to grant residents more time to move out of the demolition spot where their houses were located. 

In the middle of her discussion with the officials, the slab she stood gave way and the Lok Sabha MP plunged into the ditch with three other persons. 

The fire engine squad present for the demolition rescued Maadam and others immediately. She was bleeding but conscious when she was taken to the local hospital. Madam suffered a 4-inch deep gash on her head and also hurt her shoulder and foot. She received five stitches on her head. Her X-ray reports showed no signs of fracture Maadam was airlifted later in the day to Mumbai for further treatment. 

Maadam was in Jalaramnagar at the request of local residents who were protesting against the demolition of 237 housing units in the area by the city corporation. The MP rushed to the area to buy the residents more time to vacate their dwellings and find alternative accommodations. 

The three others injured in the incident were sent to local hospital for treatment.
