The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) employees were thrashed by the suspected Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) workers when the former went to remove the illegal posters put up on Nrupathunga Road on Thursday night.

Incidentally, the policemen who accompanied them for security didn’t go to their rescue.

The KRV men to celebrate the 50th birthday of their founder leader T A Narayana Gowda, had organised a mega event at the Palace Grounds near Mehkri Circle on Friday.

In this regard, they had put up thousands of posters across the city. A few posters were put up at Nrupathunga Road. When the BBMP control room received an information about illegal posters being put up, a Prahari team was rushed to the spot.

Sources in the BBMP said four cops of Halasuru Gate police station, who were accompanying the BBMP staff to provide security, did not come to their rescue and preferred sitting inside the Prahari vehicle.

The KRV men later headed to the BBMP head office and threw stones at the building. They threatened the watchmen there when they tried to prevent them, the sources added.

All that the police could do was register a case on a complaint by BBMP Assistant Executive Engineer Umesh, said sources in BBMP. They added that the BBMP staffers registered a strong protest against police inaction.

Mayor B N Manjunath Reddy, who denounced the assault said, “Any act of hooliganism will not be tolerated.”
