Residents of Kuvempunagar Third Stage (behind Jayamma Govindegowda Convention Hall) are suffering from water-borne diseases due to the consumption of contaminated tap water.

The residents of ward no 17, represented by Corporator M S Balasubramaniam (Snake Shyam), alleged that they are forced to consume water mixed with sewage for the last three months and the situation has worsened after the onset of monsoon. The  Vani Vilas Water Works (VVWW), which manages water supply to the city, has not bothered to fix damaged pipelines in the area despite repeated pleas by the aggrieved residents.

Gracy, a resident, said, “One of my relatives has fallen sick after he consumed the dirty water. Many people have suffered skin allergy and a few are suffering from diarrhoea. A lot of people in the locality have fallen sick and children are the worst-affected.”

“We have stopped using tap water and are ordering cans from private agencies,” said Geetha, another resident.

Another resident claimed that her son has been ill since a week. “He contracted high fever. After two days, we realised that it was because of the water and took him to the doctor,” she said.

Yet another resident on condition of anonymity told Deccan Herald, “We use tap water for all purpose and it is not possible to boil all the water we use.” She further added that the corporator visited the area and has assured to fix the problem soon.
Meanwhile. the VVWW authorities said that the problem has been identified and appropriate measures have been taken to solve it.

“We have fixed the end cap to the damaged pipe, it will be fixed in a day or two. We received the complaint only two days ago. The sewage water was mixing from a pipe connection of a house,” the officials said.
