Make a splash

Last Updated 05 July 2016, 18:32 IST

As the monsoon gets into high gear across the country, it’s time to rethink fashion. The weather may seem gloomy, but that shouldn’t deter anyone from making the most of bright, trendy and appropriate trends.

Now is a good time to invest in a sturdy umbrella with an interesting pattern or design. It’s become as much an accessory as your bag or shoes, so try something that has bold candy stripes, paisley patterns or even transparent umbrellas with interesting accents on the edges.

Wading through puddles can get uncomfortable. Flip flops are a no-no because you stand the chance of getting slush and water on your feet, and it’s definitely not advisable to wear your best shoes out in this weather. A pair of rain boots is a good investment to make during the monsoons. Colourful waterproof rain boots made from rubber or PU will keep your feet dry and add a pop of colour to your outfit. Choose from classic black to neon pinks, greens and bright purple. You can also try ankle boots with your favourite cropped jeans to make commuting on foot a lot less messier.

When it comes to putting together an outfit for a rainy day, getting a quality raincoat or a waterproof trench coat is essential. The classic trench can be worn both with jeans or trousers, and with dresses as well. If you want to wear something other than black or beige, reds, pinks and printed trenches are the best way to add a bit of cheer to the gloominess in the clouds. Add a scarf in an eye-catching colour and you’ll be warm as well as trendy!

The key to creating the perfect monsoon look is layering – it’ll keep you cosy and also make your outfit interesting. Wear a knit top or sweater with cropped or boyfriend jeans which provide a relaxed fit and can be rolled up to avoid getting mud or water on them.  You can add a sporty jacket or a printed hoodie to complete the look and protect yourself from the chill.

If you’d still rather wear skirts and dresses, layer a skirt over a pair of warm tights and rain-proof boots or lace-up booties. Add a cardigan or coat and you’re all set.

Suede and leather aren’t very rain-friendly and are best kept away from water. The rains might make it tough to avoid getting your handbag wet, and the latest trend observed for bags is transparent tote bags. They make it easier to keep track of all your stuff , keep everything dry and safe and also look  like so much fun to carry!

Get one in candy colours like yellow, pink and purple.
Something else to keep in mind — avoid too much makeup during the season.
A good waterproof mascara and a bold lip are all you need to make a splash
this season.

Fashion can be tough to pull off during the rains, but a little mixing and matching goes a long way. The key to keep warm yet stay trendy this season.
