Final year Mechanical Engineering students of Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology and Management, Bantakal, have developed a mechanism to rescue children trapped in borewells.

Harish R Nadagoud , Ranjith R Prabhu, Vikhyath Joshi and Suraj Bangera have developed this technology under the guidance of Kishor Kumar Aroor, assistant professor of Mechanical Engineering.

A press release from the college said the students’ unique mechanism has better characteristics than the present technology which takes a long time to save the children trapped in borewells. Through this mechanism, it is possible to reach depth and it can handle children without hurting them. The system has battery operated links and a gripper with cushion for holding children firmly and lifting them without any harm.

A camera is provided with a USB cable which can be directly connected to a laptop. It also consists of LED bulbs so that it provides better vision in dark, which enables controlling person to view the exact situation in the borewell and decide on how to hold and lift the children. It is also has an oxygen supply pipe to cater to the child trapped inside.

This project is carried out by the students as part of their final year academic project. The college management, Principal Dr Thirumaleshwara Bhat and HoD of Mechanical Engineering Dr Sudarshan Rao K have appreciated the students.
