It is an exciting time for poetry enthusiasts as the Bengaluru Poetry Festival (BPF) is around the corner. The city’s first festival dedicated to poetry, BPF is the first-of-its-kind to provide a platform for poets to perform in English, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam and many more languages.

The inaugural edition of BPF will be held on August 6 and 7 at The Leela Palace. This was announced at Church Street Social recently. The festival has been conceptualised by Subodh Sankar and Lakshmi Subodh, co-founders of Atta Galatta, and will include poetry performances, talks about poetry and opportunities to learn through workshops and interactive sessions.

Says Subodh, “We have been seeing an increased interest in poetry recently and many people are getting involved in making, reading and listening to poetry. It is a powerful form of self-expression. Yet this art does not have too many forums of its own; it is generally clubbed within the general ambit of literature. In most cases, poetry is somewhat lost in the many literature festivals being conducted annually. This gave us the idea to start a festival exclusively for poetry.”

Shinie Antony, festival director, says, “It is one of the few performance-oriented poetry fests in the world.”

BPF 2016 has partnered with a number of Bengaluru-based poetry groups like ‘Ink Weaver’, ‘Airplane Poetry Movement’ and ‘Let Poetry Be’. It will provide opportunities for local poets to perform alongside invitees, blurring the divide between performers and the audience.

Distinguished names like Javed Akhtar, Kamalinee Mukherjee, Vikram Sampath, Anjum Hasan, Vasundhara Das, Vasu Dixit and K Satchidanandan are some among the performers at the event. The discussion topics and interactive sessions include themes like the craft of translating poetry, the craft of poetry writing itself, writing poetry that can be set to music, discussion with the publishers of poetry and more.
