As an actor you get to play many fictional characters, but it is rare to get an opportunity to portray a real life artiste,” says Sonali Kulkarni talking about her role as Bhavna Dutt in director and writer Saif Hyder Hasan’s theatrical venture, Gardish Mein Taare.

Co-written by Hasan and Sumana Ahmed, the 80-minute love story narrates the tale of two passionate lovers and draws inspiration from the turbulent times and
relationship shared by creative geniuses – Guru Dutt and his wife Geeta Dutt (on whom Kulkarni’s character is based).

“I feel extremely lucky that Saif approached me for Bhavna’s role. It was a unique challenge to explore and essay a character that has talent and passion,” says Kulkarni.

The actor adds that she will also be seen singing on stage. “I belong to a culturally- oriented family and have learnt singing and dancing as a child. So, I am a trained singer and all the live singing in the play has been done by me,” she adds.

However, despite starring in movies like Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya..., Dil Chahta Hai, and more recently Singham, Kulkarni is not often seen on the big screen. On being asked the reason, she says, “I have been busy with regional cinema and theatre. It is not that I have not been active on the big screen. I have acted in movies like The Good Road (2013) which was nominated as India’s official entry to the Oscars in the Best Foreign Film category. But yes, Bollywood is something I need to get back to,” she tells
Metrolife.

Despite juggling between various mediums like films and theatre, along with intermittent stints on reality shows on the small screen, Kulkari says she has no favourites.

“I enjoy every medium that pays me good money. Above everything else is the fact that I enjoy acting and want to reach out to the widest audience. So I cannot pick one medium over the other,” she says.

Gardish Mein Taare will be staged at  Sri Sathya Sai Centre Auditorium on July 23 and 24 at 7 pm.
