A wedding outfit is supposed to be something in which a bride feels beautiful and comfortable. For their latest bridal and couture collection, designers Monica and Karishma from the label JADE, have attempted to go beyond the traditional lehengas and sarees and have created vibrant, contemporary pieces which are rooted to its traditional virtue.

To be showcased at the upcoming Vogue Wedding Show 2016 in August, the collection allows the brides to experiment with the conventional styles.

In a candid conversation with Metrolife, the duo share more about the collection and its intricacies.

Excerpts:

What is the collection all about?

Our bridal couture collection 2016, titled ‘Videha’s Siya’, is inspired by the celebrated love story of Ram and Sita, depicted in the form of Mithila art. The Mithila paintings embody the culture, festivities and traditions of those times. These creations can be passed on from one generation to other of brides to mark the beginning of a fairytale journey.

What detailing has been done to it?

The collection has been created using rich heirloom fabrics, handwoven with regal embellishments and a contemporary twist. We have incorporated stylish short and long jackets, paired with vibrant contemporary lehengas. The traditional kedias have been given a modern and chic look by pairing them with vintage lehengas. Our versatile palazzo pants with a detachable skirt and beaded drawstrings have a unique aesthetic, which are woven on Banarasi fabric and adorned with rich textures and colour pallets. These combinations are ideal for today’s brides who are always eager to experiment.

What kind of embellishments and motifs have you used?

The romantic milieu of the enchanting forests and Videha’s scenic beauty has inspired the collections motifs and embellishments. The allurement of nature’s elements used in these paintings, such as the crescent of the moon, dainty petal lotuses signify the love and eternity of Sita. The plumage of the majestic peacock has been aesthetically captured in the bridal collection with grandeur.

What colours have you worked with?

The eclectic and unique colours used in these paintings beautifully represent traditional rituals, and the emotions the bride and her family goes through during the wedding. Drawing from this amorous and pious burst of colours, the collection captures the essence of cultural values that are woven in regal colours such as Prussian blue, auburn, and Persian rose.

How about the trending lightweight wedding outfits?

There is a common misconception that lightweight outfits are only restricted to the embellishments. The weight of the outfit also depends on the fabrics used. Keeping this in mind, we have used a lot of lightweight Banarasi fabrics that are rich in colours and won’t add extra weight to the outfit. We have designed chic embroidered jackets that can be swapped with the dupatta and choli.

Which is your favourite piece from the collection?

Our favourite pick is the classic Champaign lehenga. It is encrusted with gilded beads all over and has textured work on the lehenga. The dupatta is very feminine with floral embellishments and delicate lace boarder.
