Dear Madam,

I am doing my second year BSc in Biotechnology from Mysore University. I wish to do MSc in Oncology or Microbiology abroad. Which course is better of the two?

Which is the best university to study MSc of my desired subject abroad with affordable expenses? What exams should I take? Please do let me know if there is any scholarship for General Merit students to study abroad.

A Student

Dear Student,

You can pursue your Masters in Microbiology with specialisation in Oncology. In the UK, you would take one year to complete the course while in the US, it will be a two-year programme. Hence the UK will be more affordable. You need to only write the IELTS exam. Merit based scholarships are offered by all universities. If you wish to study in Germany, Canada or the US, take the GRE exam too. For more information on the list of universities that are known for your subject, please visit www.umaaswani.com.

Dear Madam,

Is it worth doing MS in Computer Science in Germany in terms of getting employment in India or Germany?

A Student

Dear Student,

Germany is a wonderful place to study in and is a dream location for many students. Students get long stay visas and education is free or very nominal in most universities. Internship opportunities and job placements are available to every student. For more information on study in Germany, visit www.study-in.de/en and www.daaddelhi.org. The Bengaluru DAAD information point is in the Cash Pharmacy building on Residency Road.

Also if you are keen on Germany, get in touch with the Goethe Institute to learn German. Although the programmes are taught in English, preference will be given to students who know German. The Goethe Institute (Max Mueller Bhavan) in Indiranagar offers special courses for students who want to go to Germany for higher education. Here is a link to their website: www.goethe.de/ins/in/bag/enindex.html.

Dear Madam,

I am currently in second year of Mechanical Engineering in one of the reputed colleges in Bengaluru and want to do my Masters in Automotive Engines either in Germany or USA. I want to do research along with academics in the next three years. Please suggest some good universities. Also, inform the right time to join coaching classes either for academic or skill development and suggest some good institutions for the purpose. Lastly, inform me about the procedure to apply for foreign universities.

Rohan Krishna

Dear Rohan,

Both Germany and the United States have excellent universities for Mechanical or Automotive engineering. First decide which country you want to study in.

Research the universities there. There are many websites which rank the universities according to the subject, student satisfaction, teaching, location and other criteria. See what is important to you and shortlist a few universities. Carry out some research work outside the requirement of your regular course work. If possible, get your work published in some journal, newspaper or online. Take the GRE and TOEFLiBT test. There is no need to join any coaching classes. Practice test papers are available online. You can log on to www.ets.org to practise, register and take the tests.

Make sure your passport is ready. If it needs to be renewed, do so quickly. You will need a valid passport to register for and take the tests. You have to write a personal statement of 1000 to 1500 words. This essay should tell the admissions office about you, your strengths, your subject choice, career goals and why you want to study in their university. You would then have to request three referees to write you a letter of recommendation. At least two of them should be academic referees from your present university. The third referee can be from your internship/work experience/community service etc. Finally, put together all your transcripts (marks cards) and apply to the universities.

Dear Madam,

My son has completed his BDS degree from RGUHS and now doing his internship at the same university. He is interested in doing his Masters abroad from the best universities. I would like to know if Indian BDS degree is recognised in UK/Canada/USA/Australia. Kindly furnish details of the exams for pursuing a Master’s degree. Also, provide information as to how to avail the scholarship, course duration, fee structure for a Master’s degree, other possibilities to work as a general dentist and any other short term courses that are of value.

A Parent

Dear Parent,

Indian BDS is recognised in all countries. After BDS, one can pursue MDS, MSc or PhD in one of these specialisations: Endodontics, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Dental Material Science, Dental Implantalogy, Orthodontics, Oral Pathology, Paediatric Dentistry, Dental Technology, Primary Dental care, Public Health and Dentistry etc. Your son could also consider an MBA in Hospital Management.

To get admission in a university, he needs to only write the IELTS exam. To be able to practice in another country, he has to write the qualifying exams like ORE (overseas registration exam conducted by the British Dental Council) for UK; ADC (Australian dental examination) for Australia; the licensing exam conducted by the American Dental Association to practise in the US and Canada.

If he wants to pursue a PhD, it is advisable that he gains two years of clinical practice before he applies. Scholarships, teaching assistantships and research assistantships are available for academic achievers.
