The High Court on Wednesday questioned why the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission and Police Complaint Authority have not taken up a suo motu complaint against the policemen who manhandled the residents of Yamanur in Navalgund taluk, Dharwad district.

Justice A N Venugopala Gowda expressed shock and displeasure over the behaviour of the policemen and said that he was grieved to see farmers, women and children, who were not even part of the agitation, being beaten up by the police.

People from Dharwad, Belagavi, Gadag and other north Karnataka districts staged a protest on July 30 against the Mahadayi water dispute verdict. The court said that only the Women‘s Commission chief had visited the people of Yamanur. and it was very unfortunate that the other departments have not visited the place to check the people's plight there.

The court directed the government counsel to submit the report of the Home department about the lathicharge on Friday.
