BJP leader makes objectionable remarks on Azam Khan

Last Updated 03 August 2016, 19:17 IST

A senior BJP leader embarrassed his party while criticising Uttar Pradesh minister and firebrand Muslim leader Azam Khan, who said the Bulandshahar gang-rape could be a “political conspiracy”.

UP BJP spokesman I P Singh said Azam would be able to “understand” the “pain and agony” of the Bulandshahar gang-rape victims — a mother and her daughter — only when his own wife and daughter were “gang-raped”.

“Azam Khan will realise only if his wife and daughter are gang-raped,” Singh said on his Facebook and Twitter accounts on Wednesday.

The saffron party leader refused to express regret over his remarks saying that they were “emotional outbursts”. “I will not express regret until Azam Khan tenders apology over his remarks on Bulandshahar gang-rape”, Singh said.

He said his intention was to make Azam realise the pain and agony of the gang-rape victims. “I got carried away by emotions...but I stand by my words,” he added.

State BJP leaders said Singh should have refrained from making such remarks.
