Ex-spy story gone bad

Last Updated 06 August 2016, 19:37 IST

Jason Bourne
English (U/A) Cast: Matt Damon, Alicia Vikander, Tommy Lee Jones, Julia Stiles
Director: Paul Greengrass

Jason Bourne (Damon) is forced to get back into the CIA’s cat and mouse game after his old friend Nicky (Stiles) is killed for having discovered a secret list of CIA Black Ops.

To get to the bottom of the issue that would shed light on his father’s death and other controversial operations, Bourne starts his own operation that puts him directly up against CIA director Robert (Tommy Lee Jones) who is keen on getting access to the data of social network giant Deep Dream in the guise of national security. However, Bourne gets unexpected help from CIA agent Heather Lee (Vikander) who has her own plot to ‘bring in’ the former top agent.

The fifth edition in the Bourne franchise is a total letdown. Damon, who was replaced by Jeremy Renner in last film, The Bourne Legacy, fails to show enthusiasm. There is lack of command in his facial expressions and stunts. The plot is also muddled in Bourne’s motivations — we are not sure whether he wants sweet revenge or to take down the entire illegal CIA operations or maybe both. It could be the worst we have seen of Damon in recent years. Blame it on the director and the screenplay, the action is boring to the core. It looks as if Damon has totally lost touch with his character in the earlier films like The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. Watch it only if you are a die-hard fan of the Bourne series.
