The use of high beam headlights in a car triggered a freak accident on Saturday evening, leading to the death of a 21-year-old fashion design student. The accident occurred on a service road on the Outer Ring Road in Sumanahalli, Kamakshipalya in northern Bengaluru, around 7.30 pm.

The deceased, Amulya, was riding a motorcycle on her way to Moodalapalya to visit a relative. She came across a car in the opposite direction with its high beam headlights switched on. The headlights blurred her vision and she failed to control her two-wheeler which went on to hit a man crossing the road.

The man, Kamal, fell on the right side of the road. Amulya also lost balance and collapsed. Just then, the car with the high beam headlights ran her over. Amulya was not wearing helmet.

The car driver, Mallikarjun, took both Amulya and Kamal to a hospital where the young student could not be saved. Kamal is out of danger. The jurisdictional Kamakshipalya police rushed to the spot and arrested Mallikarjun.

“We have been creating awareness among motorists against the use of high beam headlights as it is dangerous for fellow motorists. Still, people drive around with such headlights,” a senior traffic officer said, adding the police were planning a crackdown on such headlights. Amulya, 21, from Papareddy Palya, was studying at the Indian Institute of Fashion Technology.
