A 26-year-old man was found murdered at a cremation ground in outer Delhi’s Narela on Friday, his head apparently smashed with bricks. Around 6.30 am when the cremation ground’s priest Ram Niwas entered the place he spotted the body lying in a corner. A blood-splattered brick lay next to it.

“The man’s head was badly smashed with a heavy and blunt object, possibly bricks and stones,” said a police officer. A shocked Ram Niwas ran towards the police post and informed officers there.

Police officials reached the cremation ground, situated just outside of Bakner village, and took the body in their custody. The victim, later identified as Anoop was a resident of Bakner village and was known to be a drug addict.

Police have detained some men and juveniles from the village in connection with the murder. Police officials questioned Anoop’s father Anand and found that the man had left home on Thursday at 8.30 pm.

“Anoop was a drug addict and used to roam in the village and outside with vagabonds. His parents didn’t even bother to ask him where he was going as he often used to spend his nights outside,” the officer added.

Anand, who works with Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) as a clerk, told police that the vagabonds with whom Anoop used to hang around could be behind his death.

Drug addicts
Sources said that Anoop could have been murdered during a scuffle with other drug addicts in the night. Earlier, also he was involved in some fights with village youths for petty reasons.

Anoop was unemployed and lived with his parents, brother and sister. His elder brother works in a private company. Police said a long period of unemployment made him start taking drugs.
