A 24-year-old youth was thrashed by residents of an apartment in Bellandur, when he tried to rape a woman, while she was asleep in her flat.

The suspect is Prashanth Jeethdas, a native of West Bengal who was working as a waiter in a hotel in Bellandur. Based on a complaint filed by the 38-year-old victim, Jeethdas and a security guard of the apartment, Mithun Nayak, were arrested, said the police.

On August 18 night, Jeethdas scaled the apartment wall and went around the premises. He climbed up a water pipe and reached a ledge of the first floor.

He noticed a sliding window and opened it and entered the house.

He found the woman sleeping with her children. He held her legs and the woman woke up and found Jeethdas. She raised an alarm and the neighbours came to her rescue.

He was trying to escape through the main door, but was caught and thrashed by residents, who handed him over to the HSR Layout police station, added the police.

During investigations, it was learnt that Jeethdas and Nayak were friends and used to meet frequently at the apartment. Police said Nayak helped Jeethdas scale the wall.

Jeethdas was in an inebriated state when the incident took place, the police said. A case has been registered in HSR Layout police station.
