From spinning invisible webs like Spiderman, jumping around with dad’s helmet on as Super Mario or going to war as a G.I. Joe soldier, we never got tired of impersonating our favourite cartoon characters. This is how the comic-theme restaurant, What A Comic Show does. It takes you on a  flashback ride of those days when comic characters were our real heroes.

Located in the Safdarjung Development Area Market, the place’s walls and interiors justify the restaurant’s name with comic characters of all kinds and sizes adorning the walls and bright-coloured furniture. There is also a miniature library of comics and novels to read while you eat or drink.

What A Comic Show was launched three years back by the Manipuri couple Bhupen Chingtham and Pooja Moiranthem. “Me and my wife are big comic and food lovers; and we travel a lot. However, we never found a combination of these two together at any of the places we have travelled to. Therefore, we thought of launching something where comics and food share space together. And hence, What A Comic Show”,
says Chingtham.

The café also organises live acoustic musical nights — English on Fridays, and Bollywood on Saturdays. It also holds screenings of blockbusters in the genre of animation, along with superheroes costume parties and hosts themed events on occasions like Halloween or Valentine’s Day and more.

Coming to food, their bat-shaped menu offers a mix of oriental and continental delicacies. To begin with, we ordered ‘Spicy Chicken Wings’, ‘Juicy Chicken Drumstick’ and ‘Chicken Szechwan Dumplings’. For drinks, we tried ‘Venom’, which was made of orange juice, lemon juice, soda and white wine. Going by its name, we expected the cocktail to be strong, but surprisingly the preparation was quite refreshing and light. The chicken wings were mildly spiced. Marinated in flour batter and then deep fried, it gave a crunch to the dish. While the chicken drumsticks somehow taste like chicken wings, dumplings are worth a try. Stuffed with chicken shreds and seasoned with Szechwan sauce, the hot steaming little dumplings were served with their signature chilli sauce.

Moving to the main course, Metrolife decided to go for ‘Chicken Florentine’. Though the dish took a little long to arrive, but once it did we couldn’t resist and immediately gorged on it. Served in a beautiful orange plate, it had a large grilled chicken breast, stuffed with cream and spinach. It came with two pieces of garlic bread, potato mash and sautéed vegetables. The dish is enough for two people. A total value for money! Ending our meal, we had ‘Brownie with Vanilla Ice Cream’.
