'Big builders spared in demolition drive'

The Cubbon Park Walkers’ Association on Saturday demanded action against big builders and slammed BBMP for “disregarding” the High Court ruling on demolition of encroached structures.

Addressing a press conference, the association’s president, S Umesh, said, “We had filed a petition in the High Court demanding action against builders who have eaten up stormwater drains (SWDs). Based on this petition, the court gave a ruling on August 3, 2011, directing the civic agency to demolish the buildings and submit a report every month on the encroached structures in the city.”

The civic agency, however, had failed to comply with the ruling, he said. “It has spared big builders and malls and is targeting only the middle class and the poor,” Umesh said.
