Unleashing an open war against existing telecom players, Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani announced the launch of Jio from September 5, offering unlimited free lifetime of voice calls and data tariffs as low as Rs 50 per GB.

“Today, I have great pleasure in announcing a revolutionary concept for the Indian market. All voice calls for Jio customers will be absolutely free. The era of paying for voice calls is ending,” Mukesh said, addressing the shareholders at the 39th annual general meeting of the Reliance Industries Limited.

And in the spirit of One India, no roaming charges also, he added. The data rates are as low as 5 paise per MB or Rs 50 per GB. “And the more data you use, the lower the rate,” Mukesh said. He also announced the launch of affordable 4G LTE smartphones.

“And for those users who want to hold on to their 2G/3G smartphones , we are introducing our 4G LTE personal router,” Mukesh added.
