A central government project to improve tourist amenities would fund the effort to make Chennai, Mamallapuram, Rameshwaram, Manpadu and Kanyakumari more attractive for visitors.
The central sanctioning and monitoring committee (CSMC) set up to approve and monitor projects under the Swadesh Darshan tourist circuit development has granted Rs 100 crore to these centres to build newer facilities such as light and sound shows.
“The major aspect of the facelift in these tourist centres would include improving amenities in beaches, building a pedestrian bridge to connect Vivekananda memorial with Tiruvalluvar Statue, besides sound and light shows,” a tourism ministry official said.
