It's like summer in Bengaluru

Last Updated 06 October 2016, 20:59 IST

It seems like summer has already set in October, immediately after the southwest monsoon. The maximum temperature in Bengaluru on Thursday was 30.8 degrees Celsius which was three degrees above normal.

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials, this is a normal phenomena.

On October 15, 2015, Bengaluru had recorded a maximum of 32.1 degrees Celsius and on September 6, 2016, a maximum temperature of 31.7 degrees Celsius was recorded.

IMD-Bengaluru Director (In-charge) S M Metri said the temperatures are two to three degrees Celsius above normal because the conditions are not favourable for northeast monsoon to set in. Ideally, it should have set in soon after the southwest monsoon ended on September 30, he added.

He explained that there is no change in the wind direction. Even now, westerly winds are  prevailing. There should have been an upper air cyclonic circulation from southwest Bay of Bengal by now. The trough from Arabian Sea to Bay of Bengal is also not prevailing. All these factors have led to an increase in temperatures and it will continue in Bengaluru and surrounding areas till the onset of north east monsoon, likely to set in October second or third week.
