Mamma Mia! Again

For a cause
Last Updated 22 November 2016, 19:49 IST

Money, money, money must be funny in a rich man’s world, Money, money, money, always sunny in a rich man’s world,” sings Donna Sheridan in the film Mamma Mia. Trying to make ends meet, Sheridan works really hard to build a life for herself and her daughter. A very strong character, Sheridan is an inspiring figure.

Similar stories of women working hard to build a life come from Women on Wheels by Azad Foundation and Sakha Consulting Wings. It is a social initiative that helps women living in slums a chance to escape poverty, by training them to become professional drivers.

“I wanted to support the cause of these women who are striving hard to change their fortunes. What better way than to perform Mamma Mia, where all the four characters are strong and powerful women,” says Ritu R Chandra, the producer of the show, ‘Mamma Mia! Again’. The famous musical has been inspired by ABBA songs and has been performed all over the world by various directors and is also a popular movie around love, laughter and friendship.

Chandra has directed several plays before including ‘Khushi Ek Ehsaas’, which featured more than 50 visually impaired children on stage. “I like doing plays for a cause. Since I wanted to contribute to women empowerment, I approached the Azad Foundation. In Mamma Mia the team is performing without any fees. But we do need money to hire equipment and book the auditorium, which is why we are running a fundraising campaign on Wishberry. The funds will go to help women who want to take the strings of their life in their own hands,” she says.

The English play is being supported by a cast and crew of over 30 people.

The show will be held at Shri Ram Centre of Performing Arts on December 8 and 9  at 7 pm and on December 10 at 3.30 pm and 7pm.
