Anti-demonetisation strike evokes lukewarm response in Karnataka

“Aakrosh Diwas,” the nationwide protest called by various opposition parties against demonetisation of high-value currency notes by the Centre, evoked lukewarm response across the state on Monday.

Normal life was not affected anywhere as shops and commercial establishments remained open. Banks, government offices and educational institutions functioned as usual. There was no disruption in transportation as private and KSRTC buses plied on the day. There were no reports of any untoward incident during the protests.

In Mysuru, the members of Congress Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Leftist parties staged protests at various parts of the city.

The Congress members took out a bike rally and later staged a dharna at the Gandhi Square. The workers of the Left parties demanded that prime minister withdraw demonetisation of currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denomination.

Meanwhile, BJP workers distributed sweets and flowers to government employees, bank officials and shopkeepers for their “support” for demonetisation.

Normal life was not affected in Hassan and Chamarajnagar districts also. In Mandya, former Lok Sabha member, Ramya said that BJP leaders knew about demonetisation in advance. The BJP men served sweets, biriyani and tea to the people as part of their Sambhrama Diwas.

Life was normal in the twin cities of Hubballi-Dharward, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada districts.

BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa on Monday termed the call given by the Congress and other parties to observe Monday as “Aakrosh Diwas” to protest against demonetisation as an “utter flop,” reports DHNS from Bengaluru.

In a statement released to the media, he stated that the people had given a slap on the face of the parties which had given the call. He stated that the Opposition had tried to misguide the people against the prime minister’s fight against black money.
