The body of the young boy was taken in procession to the cremation grounds, where his father Harjit Singh Channa lit the funeral pyre.

An inconsolable Harpreet Kaur, the toddler’s mother, said: “We went to Australia for a better family life with our son. But now we have come back without him.” The couple along with Gurshan had gone to Australia only two months ago.

Gurjeet Singh, a maternal uncle of the deceased, said the family was totally shattered after the loss of their son. He demanded speeding up of investigations into the case while appealing to the Indian government to take up the matter with the Australian government.
Gurshan Singh’s body was found dumped on March 4 about 30 km away from their rented apartment in Melbourne. Gursewak Dhillon, their neighbour, has been charged with the murder.

Dhillon has reportedly admitted to the police that he had accidentally hit the boy with the apartment door and as the boy fell unconscious, he panicked and put him in his car boot. He dumped the boy alongside a road from where the body was recovered.
Before flying Gurshan’s body home, a memorial service was held in Melbourne. Harpreet’s mother Gurdev Kaur, who lives in Canada, had flown in to attend the funeral of her grandson.
