Last Updated 15 March 2010, 17:24 IST

A case of dacoity and extortion has been registered against the eight policemen and an official inquiry has been ordered.

A Haryana police communique said here that the eight cops surrendered themselves on Sunday night for their involvement in “criminal activities.” They have been detained for questioning. Their ranks ranged from head constables to constables. The head of the team, an assistant superintendent of police is also reportedly being questioned for his role in the sordid incident of extortion.

Haryana DGP Ranjiv Dalal said it was a serious issue and that strict action would be taken after the inquiry. He has ordered the 15-member STF to be made “non operational” until the inquiry is over.

The  nefarious role of the cops came under the arc lights after a CCTV footage at a jewellery shop at Panipat identified a head constable, belonging to the STF, in civil clothes.  The jeweller, V K Malhitra, had lodged a complaint after some people demanded Rs 10 lakh from him. Another complaint was lodged by a stock broker Rajat, who alleged that unidentified armed men had taken away Rs 6 lakh after threatening him.
